What to Do, Eat & See in Happy Valley, PA
Looking for an artsy, nature-filled summer weekend getaway? Let me introduce you to Happy Valley, Pennsylvania, where small-town charm meets college-town energy, scenic outdoor escapes, and vibrant seasonal events like the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts (Arts Fest). Whether you’re visiting during Arts Fest or just planning a relaxing weekend, State College, Bellefonte, and nearby towns like Boalsburg offer an ideal mix of culture, food, shopping, and adventure.
I’ve spent two full weekends exploring Happy Valley—wandering through local galleries, breweries, and historic downtowns—and rounded up my favorite finds to help you plan your own perfect visit.
Top Things to Do
Located just steps from campus, the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens offer 10+ acres of peaceful walking paths, seasonal blooms, and tranquil garden spaces—perfect for a quiet morning stroll or a post-brunch breather. It’s open year-round and free to visit.
Set in a restored 1810 home with ties to the Underground Railroad, this small-but-mighty art museum showcases regional artists, rotating exhibits, and community art. Bonus: it’s free and right in charming downtown Bellefonte.
Rooted Farmstead Flower Fields
Snip your own bouquet in the flower fields at Rooted Farmstead—one of my absolute favorite stops. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and perfect for a solo adventure, date day, or family outing. Keep an eye out for special events like flower arranging classes and farm-to-table dinners.
Bellefonte Self-Guided Walking Tours
Nicknamed the “Victorian Jewel of Pennsylvania,” Bellefonte is a beautifully preserved town filled with ornate 19th-century architecture, charming storefronts, and scenic spots like Gamble Mill and Talleyrand Park. You can explore it all on foot with one of several self-guided walking tours, including the Historic Bellefonte Victorian Homes Tour and routes created by the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association (BHCA). These walks are a great way to dive into the town’s rich history and admire its standout architecture at your own pace.
Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts
If you’re visiting in mid-July, Arts Fest is a must. This nationally ranked juried art fair brings over 300 artists to downtown State College, with open-air markets, public art, food vendors, and live performances. I went in 2025 and was blown away by the creativity on display.
Located in Boalsburg, this museum honors Pennsylvania’s military contributions with indoor exhibits and outdoor memorials. It’s a thoughtful and educational stop that covers everything from the Revolutionary War to present day.
Downtown State College Public Art Walk
Take a self-guided stroll to discover murals, sculptures, and installations created in collaboration with Arts Fest, Downtown State College Improvement District, and local artists. It’s a fun and inspiring way to explore the town on foot. Download the brochure here.
Located in Beaver Stadium, this museum celebrates the athletic legacy of Penn State with exhibits that span multiple sports. Great for Nittany Lion fans or anyone interested in college athletics.
Take a boat ride through Penn’s Cave, America’s only all-water cavern that you can explore entirely by boat. Located just 25 minutes from State College, it’s a uniquely cool and family-friendly underground experience. The attached wildlife park and nature trails make it a great half-day outing.
Where to Stay
Prices may spike during Penn State home games or events, so book early!
This boutique hotel is full of vintage collegiate charm, walkable to everything downtown, and has details that nod to Penn State throughout. I loved the maze-like book wallpaper and collegiate decor. Onsite garage parking is $15/day.
If you’re after a slower pace, this B&B offers three cozy rooms, warm hospitality, and the best homemade breakfast I’ve ever had. It’s walking distance to Talleyrand Park and full of small-town charm.
Other Lodging Options to Consider:
- The Milk House or The Wagon Shed at Nittany Meadow Farm
- The Bellefonte Campground
- Hyatt Place or Scholar Hotel State College
- Nittany Lion Inn
- The Gamble Mill (lodging + restaurant!)
- Hilton Garden Inn or Courtyard by Marriott
Where to Eat & Drink
A cozy, colorful brunch spot outside State College with a bright yellow interior. The banana bread French toast and lattes are worth the wait. Expect crowds on weekends—it’s a local fave.
Craving a quick, satisfying burger in downtown Bellefonte? This casual eatery delivers big on flavor and has a great variety of creative burger combos.
No visit to State College is complete without a stop at the iconic Berkey Creamery. Flavors like Peachy Paterno and Death by Chocolate are legendary, and the ice cream here supports Penn State’s Food Science programs. I tried the Strawberry Cheesecake and the cheesecake pieces? Unreal.
Located in Boalsburg, this brunch gem serves up green chile sauce-topped burritos that hit the spot. Great outdoor seating and friendly staff.
Inside a renovated factory, Axemann offers tons of seating, rotating beers, and great food from Marin Eats (I left so full). Pet-friendly patio and pizza from Flo Bros, too.
A laid-back brewery with top-tier IPAs and a colorful, artsy interior. Bonus: Their cheesesteaks (from Uncle John’s Jawns) might just be the best I’ve ever had.
A curated trail of breweries, distilleries, cideries, and wineries across Happy Valley. Perfect for a DIY beverage crawl—each stop highlights local flavors and hospitality.
A Penn State landmark since 1926, this classic diner-meets-college hangout is a local tradition. It’s seen generations of students and visitors come through—and it’s still a great spot for coffee or a casual bite.
A true farm-to-table dining experience with panoramic views, thoughtful dishes, and an open kitchen. It’s a bit outside town, but well worth the drive for something special.
A lively sports bar perfect for catching a game or grabbing casual bites with friends. Champs serves up classic pub fare—think wings, burgers, and loaded nachos—in a fun, high-energy atmosphere. Great for groups and late-night eats near Penn State.
Where to Shop Local
Elevated Penn State gear, alumni gifts, and stylish merch that goes beyond the basics.
A café-meets-gift-shop with coffee, locally made goods, and a relaxed, artsy vibe.
A boutique spa offering facials and body treatments—perfect if your weekend needs a little self-care.
State Parks and Forests to explore
A top-tier destination for mountain biking, hiking, and picnicking just outside of State College. The Bear Meadows Natural Area is especially scenic.
Ideal for hiking and wildlife watching. Home to portions of the Quehanna Trail and the stunning Allegheny Front Trail.
Great for ATV riding, biking, and horseback riding with over 200 miles of trails. The Mid State Trail runs through here, too.
The largest state forest in PA—perfect for hiking, fishing, and ATV adventures. The Chuck Keiper Trail is a backpacker favorite.
